Dear Sir/Mdm,
Unpleasant incident with bus-driver
Date of incident: 26th June 2007
Time of incident: 12.35 p.m
Bus involved: Bus service 61, bendy bus, license plate number TIB 1151 Z
Bus driver involved: An indian bus driver
Location: Bus stop opposite of Maju Camp
That afternoon, 12.10pm. I took bus 61, from bukit batok bus interchange to reach my desired location. Near the desired location, I wanted to alight and i pressed the bell 1 time. I was seated at the very rear of the bus then. Due to the fact that i was listening to my mp3 player, that might be a chance that i didn't hear the bell. I look at the display board to see whether the bus stopping sign was lighted up, and it did not. So i immediately went forward to the exit, and press the bell 2 more times as the bus was nearing the bus-stop. This action was done as a result of me being afraid of missing the bus stop as i was already late for my appointment.
The bus driver immediately stopped the bus. The exit doors wasn't open and the driver ask me to go forward to his seat area. He simply shouted at me loudly for pressing the bell repeatly. I tried to explain my situation but he just keep scolding non-stop. Instead, i repeatly said sorry about what had happened and explain my point on what happened. I agree that it was my fault that i did not take the initiative to listen out for bell, and i must say, this is my fault and i had apologised to the bus driver.
Despite repeatedly saying sorry to the bus driver, he simply throw his temper at me, as though i was his punching bag. His scolding includes: "saying me treating bus drivers like "dogs" and exclaiming about the status of the bus, which is 5 yrs in service, and some things were not working properly, example, the display board." It did not matter to me whether the display board is out of service or what as the company has the responsibility to make sure things get working again.
What actually angers me most is the attitude of the bus driver. Poor attitude, unprofessional in his job in settling this issue, which results in poor customer service. The good image recent bus drivers have tried to set has truly been spoiled by his way of handling things. I must say, just 1 incident like this, results in me losing faith in the customer service of SMRT. Thanks to his way of scolding, I felt humliated. After enduring the scolding, i alight the bus.
I felt that the bus driver should improve on his attitude in solving any issues, and not throw his weight and temper around, especially to this customers. He should maintain professionalism of what he is doing.
He should have nicely probe why did i press the bell a few times, and politely tell me about things involve with the issue, and maybe having the input of telling me nicely, to remove my earphones and listen out for the bell next time. Wouldn't this be better?
I hope this would not happen in my future bus ride with SMRT.
Thank You.
Regards,
Chew
